Konexis’ story starts at Konvergent, with the development of their unique Stakeholder Communications team in 2019, which had the mission statement of “taking architecture to the boardroom”.
Part of this remit was looking at ways of improving roadmaps, specifically transformation maps designed in PowerPoint. This was the case with their first-ever roadmap project for a global engineering company. The existing transformation map was a PowerPoint presentation where the 60 initiatives were dotted on the sunray, with the project details following in a 25-page table. Consequently, instead of informing, it was creating confusion.
Following a design workshop with their CTO, the first prototype of what would become Konexis was made, with the subsequent praise for creating such a “clean and easy-to-use roadmap” a significant improvement on what came before.
Project by project, their understanding of what made a great Transformation map improved, as did the positive feedback from our clients. There was one issue to overcome, it was not a tool, but a design service.
Finally, after one project where our design was shown to a global CEO, who said the immortal words, “It’s fantastic, I love it, I love it”, we realised that we had the potential for something quite incredible.
Before we embarked on the mission to build Konexis, we entered an exhaustive research process of potential competitors. What we discovered astounded us. ‘Competitors’ we found offer task-based roadmap creators, developed for Product Management, but nothing designed to communicate strategically upwards to Senior Executives. It was clear that strategic influence was always an afterthought if mentioned at all. The product-based market, whilst extensive, all have the same roadmap views – timelines, tabular, swim-lane or task views, akin to a spreadsheet, with one very noticeable absentee.
No transformation map tool on the market offered an interactive sunray view. Not one. We couldn’t believe this was the case, so we looked again and again. Even data visualisation tools such as PowerBI do not offer this transformative view. Finally, after concluding that there just isn’t one available, we decided to build something totally unique, addressing a hole in the market that needs to be fixed.
